Thanks for giving me Sports
My dad was a sports fan, not the modern day internet Sports center type fan I am. No my Dad was a read the morning and evening newspapers watch the news get the Morning telegraph to see how the horses were running meat and potatoes sports fan. Phillies in the summer, Sixers in the winter, Eagles in the fall. My Dad taught me to be a Homer to love and respect where you came from and who you were. Sports had no color or creed, it was effort and hard work and fun and the chance to show the world who you were. Today’s mega contracts and egos were not as big a part of his sports world and he knew that no matter how many autographs he brought me none was as impressive as the awards with his name embossed across them. In my introduction to the sporting world he took me to see the Sixers play at Convention Hall, the Phillies at Connie Mack, the Eagles at Franklin Field, as a field trip every summer we would see the Eagles play an exhibition game in Hershey Pa. No jumbotrons, no dance teams, no sports center highlights just memories burned into my heart and spirit. I don't t think my Dad would have Blogged his ideas and expressions had to be delivered face to face and reinforced with a handshake or a look of disapproval. My Dad taught me the players were no more special than the common guy that earned a living and despite the odds put food on the table and could be trusted on his word, signing a contract and wanting to renegotiate and get out of it before the ink was dry would have turned his stomach. I thank him for teaching how to look the ball in, to work harder than the next guy, for breaking my baseball glove in and not killing me when I lost it. My Dad told me to see as many games in as many places as I could and go to the Super Bowl (he was at Super Bowl 1) never bet over your means and always pay your debts. My Dad died watching the ponies run at now departed Garden State Race Track I think he had a hand full of winners and the shock killed him, but he went out doing something he loved. On this Fathers day I thank him for all the lessons learned the love he gave and for giving me sports.

A letter to Clinton
Mr. Portis surely does not understand the statement "to whom much is given much is required" to see him and Chris Samuels yuck it up on behalf of Mike Vick was sad. Yes Mr.Portis is still young ( I have a son his age)but its seems his grip on reality and morality is very off base, a crime is a crime even if its "behind closed doors"! Perhaps this will serve as a wake up call in some form but for some reason I doubt it. Until now I had a respect for Mr. Portis as he played with a close friend's son at Miami. I hope there is some damage control being implemented as this is another Black eye on our community as apparently we don't need people like Don Imus to insult us we can do a rather good job ourselves. Incidents such as this is why I have never looked up to pro athletes but rather admired men like my father who was the first African American sales rep in the liquor industry in the state of Pennsylvania. Mr. Portis is in my prayer's.

Back on the Block
Hey hey hey....... Q was back on the block long before there was a blog for me to blog, but no matter here I am, grayer,a tad older, a bit worn by it all, and still amazed by life and people. Some might call me a survivor, some might say that much like a zombie I'm to stupid to stay dead. So I sit plan, look at the legion of scars that cover me both physical and emotional. I thank God for my Crew , four deep and very strong. lead by my wife, my two daughters and my son they held it down while I was gone the past 9 months. In my sojourn I mused over simple issues as I hoped "friends" would call me to lend their support, well I relearned a lesson that should be ingrained in my heart, that sometimes your only as important as the last dinner party you gave, or the last beer you handed out as you watched the game and your baby fried up a hella good batch of wings, and plated some tata salad to die for.Hmmm it will be football season again "cept" this season it will be just her and I .... no invites no phones answered ,no retorts to the question of what we will do after Church. Yep I'm back.... grayer, a tad older a bit worn, and still looking for the perfect beat. Lil Gurl, Soldier,Monkey, Lyrical G...... I love you all. More from me and where I sit.
T.O & jESSE
Sports is a big part of my day to day and for the past 3 months or so my Team has been held captive by Terrel Owens..... In light of Jesse Jackson supporting Mr Owens I submitted the following to the Rainbow Coalition Website.
Mr. Jackson
as a 49 year old African American I truly think in today's climate of war and cities laid to waste by hurricane that you would have more to do than support Terrel Owens. Mr. Owens is a fantastic talent on the field but our young people don't need to see another spoiled athlete be supported for conduct that is not acceptable in the work place or the locker room. I am a die hard Eagles fan having lived my life in the tri-state Delaware valley I did a total about face on Mr. Owens the year before he came to Philly admiring his work ethic. Perhaps you would be better served letting young people know that no one becomes bigger than a group of team that relies on teamwork. I know this e- mail might for all intents and purposes will never be read by you but I needed to make my feeling know as I have in regard to folks getting out to vote or not letting Mr. Bush get a free ride for mishandling the situation in New Orleans. Mr. Jackson continue to be our voice on issues that will grow and change our communities and let Mr. Owens and his agent deal with my Eagles

Rosa Parks & Momma Lou
Dear Ms.Parks
I never had the honor of meeting you but feel I have been in your presence. This summer I spent a delightful Saturday morning with Ms. Lula Whitney aka "Momma Lu" or as I call her Nanna. In the Fall season of her life at a spry 82 yrs old "Momma Lu " took me on a journey as we sat in her front yard on her 3 acre tribute to her life. In just a bit of background few folk own lots her size in South Jersey other than farmers and developers. As we chatted through the morning the hours seem to melt away so fast as car after car came by to the yard sale my wife and Momma Lu's grand daughter were having. Much like the Queen of England every person showed due respect and much love to Momma Lu and I was in awe of the loving shadow she cast. She shared with me the history and importance of the placement of every tree on her property and those adjacent to her lot. As she educated me of neighbors now long gone and the way things were I wished for a more simpler life and time for myself when neighbors knew neighbors and a village did raise up a child. On that day I came to know how a woman of your grace and dignity Ms.Parks could take your stand not to rise after a long days work so some white man could take what he thought was his rightful place as you stood. Ms.Parks to this day I attempt to address all woman of color as Ms. or Miss for I feel you all have earned that right for your struggles in our society I know at some day in time Momma Lu,Ms. Rosa Parks, Mrs.Betty James, Mrs.Natalie Williams,Mrs.Isabelle Jackson, and,Ms.Eleanor Gibson all woman I have grown to love and respect will share tea and pray we all know the blessed life's they did and perhaps impact the world as they have!
